Aspiring professionals in children’s media and related fields can compete for the 2010-2011 Early Career Fellows program

The Fred Rogers Center announces an exciting fellowship opportunity for early-career producers, animators, technologists, writers, artists, musicians, educators, and others, interested in creating exciting, high-quality media inspired by the legacy of Fred Rogers. Through the ECF program, the Fred Rogers Center acts as a catalyst for innovation in media- and technology-based work that advances early childhood development and learning.

In 2010-2011, Fellows will create projects to be used in a new, national initiative of the Fred Rogers Center. The Fred Rogers Center Early Learning Environment is being developed as a virtual community of teachers, home-based caregivers, and families who will be empowered by compelling technology and media-based resources to provide literacy-rich experiences for children from birth to age 5. The Early Learning Environment (.pdf) will use “edutainment” (educational entertainment) to deliver resources, and to encourage interaction, in a variety of engaging ways.

Four Early Career Fellows, nationally selected, will be awarded a $15,000 stipend each. Support also will be provided for expenses related to the Fellows’ work. Fellows will spend one year on the development of their projects, which will be featured online through the Early Learning Environment. In addition to the visibility provided by the Early Learning Environment, Fellows will have the opportunity to present their work at the Fred Rogers Center’s next Fred Forward Conference, in 2012. The new group of Fellows will also become part of an online community to be established by the Fred Rogers Center for ongoing professional development and networking among current and former Fellows.

The hottest ride in Disney World this summer is now on video!

TOY STORY MANIA is a plug and play released last month and developed by Schell Games in the South Side, a company riding the wave of some of the coolest gaming technology in the world.

Toy Story Mania! is the home version of the latest ride to open in the Disney theme parks, making it the most sought after FastPass this summer. Better than Buzz Lightyear, the ride zips you into a midway where Woody and gang greet you. Riders rack up points using a spring-action shooter that points virtual projectiles–like paintballs–at targets to score points. The 4-D effect gives players a new dimension of experience, a puff of air, spritz of water, the splat of the paintball.

The home version may prepare you for the park ride, notes Schell, but offers a greater variety of targets.

People doing strange things with electricity!

What is Dorkbot?
dorkbot is an international movement centered around people who like to do strange things with electricity. It’s all volunteer and non-profit — meetings are held in donated space and no admission fee is charged.

What is Dorkbot Pittsburgh?

dorkbotpgh is the pittsburgh chapter of dorkbot. Our meetings reflect what people in this area are interested in. Maybe it’s military robot prototypes reborn as art projects. Maybe it’s el-wire costumes, neon art, and backlit stained glass by local arists. Or perhaps it’s cutting edge animation from local students and hackers or a local pneumatics expert showing off technology that artists might use in an installation.

We don’t know exactly what dorkbotpgh is.
