EDUCAUSE, through the Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC), is requesting the submission of grant applications in accordance with the following terms:About the Next Generation Learning ChallengesIn order to address the barriers to educational innovation and to tap the potential of technology, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, EDUCAUSE, the League for Innovation in the Community Colleges, the International Association for K12 Online Learning (iNACOL), and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) launched the Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) in October 2010. NGLC seeks to dramatically improve college readiness and completion in the United States through the applied use of technology, particularly among low-income individuals. The program provides investment capital, builds evidence, and fosters an active community of innovators and adopters in pursuit of this goal. The program emphasizes identifying proven and emerging technology-enabled solutions, and moving them from “islands of innovation” to greater levels of adoption. NGLC focuses on supporting significant change in both the supply and demand for effective solutions to problems of student readiness, persistence, and completion. Ultimately, NGLC seeks to create a healthier marketplace of innovators and adopters who join together to dramatically increase the quality of learning experiences. NGLC provides investment capital through “Waves” of funding; each Wave is released every 6 to 12 months, and each involves a select number of challenges. The first Wave, launched in October 2010,targeted four challenges focused on improving college completion. Wave II, the focus of this present request for proposal (RFP), targets college readiness, deeper learning, and the secondary education level, defined as grades 6-12.  ….

Cirque du Soleil to host the Pittsburgh Technology Council’s 2011 Design, Art and Technology Awards (DATA)

The Pittsburgh Technology Council is proud to present the 2011 DATA Awards, Pittsburgh’s signature Art + Technology event, hosted by Lyn Heward, international Creative Director and Executive Producer of Cirque du Soleil. Joining the Pittsburgh Technology Council from Canada, Ms. Heward will present “The Spark: Igniting the Creative Fire That Lives Within Us All” while honoring the region’s leading edge intersections of tech and creativity. With a new venue, new award categories, new creative tech — and a partnership with the The Pittsburgh Entertainment Technology Project, this year’s event promises to be the biggest and best DATA Awards ceremony yet.

2011 DATA AWARD ENTRY DETAILS:
ALL SUBMISSIONS DUE FEBRUARY 28, 2011

The Pittsburgh Technology Council is currently accepting entries for the 2011 DATA Awards in following categories:

The Maker Award:
The company or individual who has created the most creative and innovative marketplace design. Including, but not limited to, product design, industrial design, interface or related applications.

The Icon Award:
The company or individual who has used emerging technologies to create visibility through innovative user experiences. Including but not limited to web and mobile applications, video, flash or any other new media marketing strategies.*

The Joy Stick Award:
The company or individual who has created the most compelling electronic game. Including but not limited to video games, animation, edutainment or gaming crossover technology.

The Art + Technology Award:
The company or individual who has created the most innovative work of art incorporating technology or technology-themed content. Finalists in this category will be invited to participate in the New Media Exhibition that accompanies the awards ceremony, and to show their work at an exhibition at the 15 Minutes Gallery in 2011/12. All media will be considered, including visual arts, music, video, sculpture, etc.

THE CRIB (Creative Rooms in Business) Award:
Pittsburgh’s most creative workplace. This award celebrates creative work environments, incorporating non-traditional design, unique methods of company community, artwork or space that encourages creativity.

GRAND PRIZE:
The Pittsburgh-to-Hollywood Awards: The region’s top entertainment technology companies are going to Hollywood! As part of the Pittsburgh Entertainment Technology (PET) Project, several of the region’s most creative tech companies will be awarded an opportunity to pitch their work to leading film industry professionals on the West Coast in July 2011. This trade mission will include the opportunity to showcase regionally-created products that interface with the national film industry – including, but not limited to, gaming, product design, mobile applications, robotics, new media advertising, merchandising, web and video.

Finalists: A list of finalists will be announced by March 30, 2011.The number of finalists will be determined by the scope of applicants. Not all applicants will become finalists.

Finalists will receive:

  • The opportunity to win a 2011 DATA Award, announced during the 2011 Awards Ceremony on April 28.
  • One ticket to the exclusive VIP event with Cirque du Soliel prior to the event, and one complimentary main event ticket.
  • The opportunity to showcase products and artwork during the 2011 DATA Awards Event and New Media Exhibition on April 28.
  • Coverage in TEQ Magazine
  • All Pittsburgh-to-Hollywood Award winners will receive an expense-paid pitch trip to Los Angeles and will be guests of honor at a Hollywood mixer.
